Warmelo is one of the five castles surrounding the small town of Diepenheim, and its history extends over a period of several centuries.
Eventhough various members of the knightly family of Warmelo can be encountered as early as the 14th and 15th centuries, the oldest lease charter of this manor house dates from april 21 1457 "Herewith does Bishop David of Bourgondy pawn the house of Warmelo in the vicinity of Diepenheim along with its grounds and its apportenances to Wibold van Warmelo on the seevrity of the house of Diepenheim. Throughout the centuries, this manor has been occupied by many old families. Eventually, consequent to the marriage of Charlotte van Gelre tot Warmelo in 1633, the estate passed to the wide-spread knightly family Sloet, which occupied it between 1633 and 1872, thereby becoming the longest residing occupants ever.
One of the later occupants, who deserves to be mentioned particularly, is Baroness F.S.A.Creutz, who renovated the house and particularly the
garden in the 1920's. She is also the one who in considerable degree effectuated the restoration of the park to its original state. In 1952, the castle was bought by H.R.H. Prins Bernhard. The prince's mother, princess Armgard, occupied it until her death in April 1971. The property is since a number of years in possession and in use of the Avenarius family.
